More Picapp Pictures of the King of Thailand

January 7, 2010

I posted a number of pictures of the King of Thailand and the Royal Family that I found on Picapp at

It’s been one of the most popular posts on this blog.

Here are some more, focusing on His Majesty the King. They are ordered approximately from oldest to newest. Unfortunately there is a big jump in the Picapp archives from the 1960s until 2006.

I copied the captions from the photos verbatim. They are not consistent about the spelling of the King’s name. Often they use the old name of Thailand: Siam.

You can look for more pictures yourself. Go to and enter a search string like “Thailand King”. You do not need to register.

Picapp / Getty are now asserting a 2010 copyright for the pictures. Surely that’s not correct? The copyright date is the date the picture was taken or first published isn’t it? It doesn’t update as the years go by!

Funny Photo Use Request

July 24, 2009

I wrote before how pleased I was when someone asked permission to use one of my pictures.

Today I received another Flickr mail that said:

Hi Ian,

I found a cool photo you took of two gold SEMTAO (Orleans, France) trams side by side on… Nice photo! Much prettier than the images at SEMTAO’s own website.

I’m working at a small tech company in California, and wondering if you would mind if I include that photo in a case study I’m working on.

Please let me know what you think… and thanks for your time!

I have never been to Orleans, France. (I wish I had). I looked at the link she provided and it relocated to

The Flickr user that sent it “joydesign“. She has no public photos. All her profile says is that she is a “Designer” in San Jose, California.

I replied to that effect and have not heard back. WTF?

I was happy to see Immuno used my product pictures in their show signage. I hope the printer did not have much trouble with my Photoshop files.

I didn’t do the hands on the right – just the menu along the bottom.
