More Picapp Pictures of the King of Thailand

January 7, 2010

I posted a number of pictures of the King of Thailand and the Royal Family that I found on Picapp at

It’s been one of the most popular posts on this blog.

Here are some more, focusing on His Majesty the King. They are ordered approximately from oldest to newest. Unfortunately there is a big jump in the Picapp archives from the 1960s until 2006.

I copied the captions from the photos verbatim. They are not consistent about the spelling of the King’s name. Often they use the old name of Thailand: Siam.

You can look for more pictures yourself. Go to and enter a search string like “Thailand King”. You do not need to register.

Picapp / Getty are now asserting a 2010 copyright for the pictures. Surely that’s not correct? The copyright date is the date the picture was taken or first published isn’t it? It doesn’t update as the years go by!

Happy New Year 2010

January 1, 2010

Where did the last decade go? It has flashed by for me. I remember standing in my garden in Northern California on New Years Day 2000 wondering if all the lights were going to go out or the house collapse because of the Y2K bug.

People scoff that the Y2K problem was over-dramatised. I think it was the opposite. Everybody took it seriously and all the testing and re-programming worked very well.

That’s all in the past. I am not worrying about Y10K. Here’s some PicApp HNY pictures to celebrate the start of the second decade of the 21st Century.

Picapp Queen Elizabeth II

November 24, 2009

Royal CipherPictures of and about my Queen.

Picapp has many good pictures of the Queen and Royal Family. I’ll publish more from time to time. They make me feel most patriotic living in this foreign land which wasn’t ever a part of the British Empire.

The official web site of the British Monarchy is here.

Picapp Laos

November 14, 2009

Here are some old pictures of Laos and related topics that I found on Picapp. There’s a character to the old black and white news photographs that you don’t see in newer pictures.

Unfortunately Picapp does not have many old pictures of the cities and countryside.

Many of the old pictures on Picapp are badly sized and I had to adjust the width and height parameters. I wrote a simple proportional calculator in an Excel spreadsheet to make it easy.

Picapp Pictures of the Thai Royal Family

November 9, 2009

Here are some pictures from Picapp about the Thai Royal Family. There are some good old pictures here although none that I have not see before in Thailand. The Bureau of the Royal Household regularly publishes pictures. They seems to be little restriction on their reuse in Thailand as long as they are respectful.

Picapp Hong Kong

November 4, 2009

Here are some of my favourite old photographs of Hong Kong that I found on Picapp. There are over 300 pages to look at.

Picapp Gosport

November 2, 2009

Picapp only has a few pictures from Gosport, the town in Southern England where I was born.

Singapore Picapps

October 30, 2009

Every so often I type something into Picapp to see what they have. The new pictures are not so interesting but again I found some old photos that I like.

I have spent a lot of time in Singapore so I like to see photos of the old city-state.

Picapp Bikini Treasures

October 27, 2009

I have found that if you skip to the end of a long set of pages of Picapp pictures they often have some antique pictures from picture libraries. They are a nice change from the sport, celebrity and news stock shots that all look the same after a while.

I did a search on “bikini” and at the end of the 3,855 “editorial” pictures I found this gem. The caption is:

More Content on Picapp

October 26, 2009

Picapp announced with a plethora of exclamation marks that the Zuma Press agency is adding its content to the service. That’s good news. However, I didn’t understand the rest of the release:

Those of you who have been blogging with us for a while noticed that we are moving toward the upper-end of the content representation and have made certain changes in our content partnerships to improve the quality of the content we provide. We believe that by working with top agencies we can better insure many of the important factors such as professional keywording, global coverage, fast server respond, clear legal rights\credits and more.

What on earth is the upper end of the content representation? How will I know when you’ve go there? I wonder if their older providers like Getty Images know they are not at the upper end.

Here’s a Zuma picture:
