Enhancing a Krathong

The Loy Krathong celebrations in Lumphini Park on Monday night were very lively and busy. But they were not very easy to photograph. People were either under very harsh sodium lights or in the shade by the lake.

The best shot I got was of a krathong floating away on the lake. Thai people believe it is a way of paying respect to the river for the life the water brings. Traditionally the krathong is home-made and includes a lock of the giver’s hair and some nail clippings.

Today most people in the city buy their krathongs ready made. Outside Lumphini Park people were selling them for 30 Baht – less than one US Dollar.

The picture on the left is straight off the Canon EOS-30D camera (RAW). On the right is the result of my careful adjustments (or random fiddling) in Lightroom. You can click on each for a larger picture.
