AOL Hires Ex-Yahoo Executive to Lead Internet Unit – NYTimes

AOL Hires Ex-Yahoo Executive to Lead Internet Unit – NYTimes.com.

AOL? I didn’t know they were still around. Didn’t they go the way of Compuserve and Prodigy?

That’s the problem Mr. Garlinghouse will face: nobody cares about AOL any more.

My first on-line, pre-Internet, experience was with Compuserve in the mid-1980s. Prodigy seemed like a big step up in ease of use with its quasi graphical interface. AOL was a “walled garden” for a long time with safe content for families. Maybe they could have kept themselves relevant but for their Time Warner merger. That must rank as one of the biggest corporate merger disasters of all time.

Capitalism is merciless.
