Has Google Found a Stairway to Heaven in Brooklyn? – Bits Blog – NYTimes.com.

It must be the “silly season” with a shortage of tech news.

I think it raises an interesting point. Many of the Google street-level pictures I’ve seen have been low quality. I suppose they are on a tight schedule and can only make one pass along a particular street. Their aim is quantity over quality.

Years ago I started a company called Virtual City Tours. We wanted to make 3D models of cities around the world from photographic imagery. It was an idea way before its time and we could not get funding. The 3D models of certain buildings in Google Earth have the same kind of idea.

We planned cars with cameras on top touring major cities. But we wanted to take out all the distractions like cars and people and make realistic 3D models that we could populate at will. We got as far as building a model of Union Square, San Francisco.

The web site is long gone but you can find it on the Internet Wayback machine.
